Clayton, Mrs Ann

Dancer from Bournemouth, Dorset.

She was able to provide information on the four hand reel derived from her father as danced by men outside the pub. In the Purbeck area it was only danced by men.

The two men stepping to each other would put a foot between the other man’s. If you made a mistake you were out and another man took your place.

Peter Swann and Tony Parker revived the dance for an EFDSS group called the Ashmore Dancers and it is that version which has been published, but they added a stepped reel rather than walking and taking of hands in the reel.

She was able to provide a notation for the four hand reel, relevant steps and also for Up the Sides and Down the Middle.

Information derived from an interview by T.M. Flett with Ann Clayton,  undated.
