Robinson, Norman

Clog dancer and researcher from Grange-over-Sands, North Lancashire. Born c. 1914, died 1970.

Nephew and pupil of Joseph Robinson (Young Jos) and thus the grandson of Stainton Robinson and great-grandson of Joseph Robinson (Old Jos).  He was able to give details of Joseph Robinson (Young Jos) repertoire and teaching.  He became an excellent exponent of the clog dance which he was still performing until a few years before he died.  He was one of Tom Flett’s early informants in England from whom 17 steps were collected.  He apparently often used these steps as a complete routine for performance.

Acted as a “local agent” for Tom Flett, searching out local dancers and informants. The following seem to have been found by him and later interviewed:

Theodore Cannon of Annan, Dumfriesshire
Harold Edgar of Field Head, Lancashire

Information derived from interviews by Tom Flett with Norman Robinson on 5, 7 & 8 January 1960.
