A performance of a clog, step, tap or even soft shoe dance on a dancing mat. These consisted of laths of wood generally glued to a cloth or canvas backing enabling them to be rolled up and carried from place with relative ease. The aim was to provide performers with a flat wooden surface upon which to dance.
