Dick Hewitt

Step dancer from Melton, Norfolk. Born 1921. Died 1994.

A virtuoso step dancer who could perform to any rhythm, Dick became well known on the folk circuit through his contacts with the EFDSS, performing at both their Albert Hall Festival and their National Gatherings.

His stepping was analysed by Peter Clifton and Ann- Marie Hulme in the late 1970s and his basic steps, although not his dance sequences were published.

Full-length sequences in hornpipe, waltz and march rhythms, accompanied by Percy Brown on melodeon were filmed in 1979 and a first rate biography is available in Musical Traditions – www.mustrad.org.uk/articles/hewitt.htm
His obituary was published in the Folk Music Journal 7;1 (1995) 129-131.

Below are two clips of Dick, filmed at an unknown location by Paula Earwicker. The musician is Peter Clifton.
