Dan Brothers and Sherry

The “Dan Brothers and Sherry” seems to have been the first grouping of the Sherry family to form after the close of the First World War probably in 1920.  Prior to this, members of the family had toured with their father, James Bernard Sherry under his stage name of Dan Conroy and Dan Sherry had performed on his own account.

The Act consisted of the three elder brothers of the family, Dan Sherry, Harry Sherry and Jim Sherry.  Little is known of their repertoire although they performed what was known as a “Piano Act”, the name given to any act involving a piano.  Dan Sherry was the pianist, Harry played violin and Jim sang and danced.

In the early 1920’s they were touring not only the UK but also Europe, performing in Berlin, Hamburg, Leipzig and Prague.  In the summer of 1926 Dan Brothers and Sherry joined a show called “Contrasts” which was produced by Harry Bentley for a company called Meteor Productions.  The first production was probably at the Hippodrome, Birmingham during the last week of June 1926.

It was while they were touring with “Contrasts” in Aberdeen in 1926 that they were joined by Sam and Peter Sherry to enable the two younger boys to learn their trade, although they do not seem to have performed with their elder brothers at this stage.

Then in September1928, the three elder brothers decided to purchase the rights to the “Contrasts” show, which, after a phase as “New Contrasts” became “A Sherry Cocktail”.
