Dancer from Downham, Lancashire. Born c. 1891.

Mrs Holgate was taught by her father, who came form Clapham, nearby.  Wife of Tom Holgate, she knew all the dances which he did, but also danced the following dances:

Kendal Ghyll
Swinging 6
Square Eight

She was able to provide a partial notation for Kendall Ghyll

She was also part of a morris dancing team in Clitheroe in her younger days and recalled learning clog dancing at school in Clapham in about 1900.

Information derived from an interview by Tom Flett and Julian Pilling with Mrs. Holgate, 26 March 1960 and from Pilling, J., “The Lancashire Clog Dance”, Folk Music Journal, 1.3, 158-179.
