Over the years Sam danced a number of clog routines, and unsurprisingly their content and style changed somewhat over time. Sam also took steps which he danced in a particular routine and recycled these into later sets of steps. Sam’s clog repertoire has been published by the Newcastle Series, the notations being derived from films of Sam dancing as well as notes taken during classes taught by Sam from time to time. The routines are considered separately, notations and films being accessed via the tabs below.
Sam Sherry's Exhibition Routine
The first routine which Sam worked up after he began to clog dance again as part of the folk revival in the late 1960s.
Sam Sherry's Waltz Routines
Sam initially wrote a single waltz routine, mixing relatively simple steps which he recalled learning from his father with more ambitios material from his years on the professional stage. This proved rather difficult for many revival dancers and accordingly he later changed to routine to incorporate simpler steps.
Sam Sherry's Hornpipe Routine
A mixture of simple hornpipe steps Sam had been taught by his father, combined with other material which Sam had acquired from other dancers in the folk revival.
Sam Sherry's Jig Routine
Written at some time prior to 1978, the lengthy routine incorporates material which almost certainly originated as 4/4 schottische steps.
Sam Sherry's Schottische Routine
A mix of steps, some recycled from his Jig routine referred to above. All in the soft shoe style made famous by Eugene Stratton and G.H. Elliot.
Sam Sherry's Polka Routine
Devised by Sam in the early 1990s, mostly from steps he recalled which he had not used in other routines.
