The Sherina Sisters

The Sherina Sisters appears to have been the name used by various combinations of the four Sherry sisters, Alice, (known as Laline), Daisy, Louise (known as Ouida) and Bessy (known as Bet).

Ouida was a ballet dancer and bender. A ‘bender’ is a type of female acrobat, one who performs the more graceful movements such as forward and backward bends, resembling the contortionist’s style. She played the violin well and was one of the few of the family who had passed some examinations. Laline was the best vocalist in the family also played the violin. Betty was a fine cellist.  The ‘Sherina Sisters’ specialised in close harmony singing and Ouida’s bending.

In September 1928 Laline, Ouida, Daisy and Bet joined their brothers to form an act known as “New Contrasts” which, in January 1929 became “A Sherry Cocktail”.  Later Ouida married and left the show, the last date on which all four sisters were in the show being the last week in October 1929.  The show was a great success but eventually the impact of the talkies began to be felt an business tailed off.

In due course “A Sherry Cocktail” metamorphosed into “The Straight 8 Sherry Family”, however in about 1930 they split back into two groups, the Sherry brothers continuing as “The Five Sherry Brothers”, and the sisters back under their original name of “The Sherina Sisters”.

One by one the sisters married and the Sherina Sisters was no more.
