World Clog Dance Championship – Stockton 1884

This appears to be one of a series of rival World Championships,  IThey were held at Stockton on the 20th-24th October.  Apparently organised by a Mr Waldia, the lesee of the Star Theatre of Varieties where the competitions were hel.

There were fifteen entries in all .

1st J. H. Haslam, London
2nd  P.C. Mckernan
3rd  J. Coleman, Liverpool

Judges:

Brotehrs Edwards, Jean Clancy  (champion sand dancer) and T. Calligan.

Haslam is described as the “former winner of the championship belt” suggesting that other, unknown rival competitions had been held in previous years although he had gained 3rd place in the 1881 championship and may perhaps have won a belt as his award.
